May's Journal
July's Journal
31/06/2025
I should have gotten around to catching up with the Journal more quickly than
this, but really, the joy went out of it after COVID-19 struck. Now I seem to
just do it to keep the thing going. I may call a halt to the whole thing at
the end of this year. 26ish years of keeping a journal should be enough for
anyone. We'll see how I feel come the new year. Anyway...
June saw Rel away for the first two weeks on her trip to the equator (and all
around there). While she was away I went to see my parents again, and did a
little rowing, which was nice.
Shortly after Rel returned we met up in London with her nephew to watch a day
of hockey, on what proved to be one of the hottest days of the year. I ended
up having to sit under shade rather than in my assigned seat so as not to get
too hot. They joined me eventually once the officious seat police calmed down
a little. From there we sent her newphew north the next day and Rel and I
headed south to Cornwall. After one night with her aunt we took the ferry over
to the Scillies to take part in the Scilly60 race (a present from Rel). This
is a race around each of the five major islands (the first one again at the end
to make six runs). If you don't make the cut-off on each island (enforced by
the tide) you're out of the race and have to get another boat to the next
island (where you can still cheer people on for the rest of the day). We
stayed in a sub-glamping tent at the top of a hill on St Mary's for the first
few nights (the first night being impossible to sleep through as the person in
the next tent was snoring more than comically, obnoxiously, loud. Race day was
excellent, although a lot harder than expected, and then we had a lovely night
in a pub/hotel on Tresco (including getting horribly sun burned for the first
time in decades). We had planned on getting a helicopter back to the main land
(another present from Rel) but this was summarily cancelled the day before, so
we had to get the ferry like the rest of the proleteriat. Most disappointing!
The remainder of the month was mainly about giving away my DVD player, and
most importantly, Rel's birthday.
